Lighting Scheme For Your Home

Scott Rodgers on Aug 28th 2009

Today the choice of fixtures available to light our homes and offices is almost limitless. From recessed cans and track lighting to wall sconces and chandeliers, indoor fixtures perform a host of functions and come in an array of styles, each suited to serve specific purposes.

With so many lighting options available, it is very important to know about these lighting types, how each one works and how can they be combined to work together to create a more pleasing environment fulfilling all your needs.

Most of us are familiar with interior design, fashion design and even landscape design, but somehow lighting design is always left out of the picture. Lighting design can make all the difference in how your home functions and feels; it can dramatically alter the appearance of your decor and transform a glare-filled, uniformly lit living space into a soothing and stunning showpiece.

We use lights for illuminating an area and therefore selecting the right kind of fixtures is very important. But apart from that, lights are also used to highlight certain special features of a room and to enhance it look. This can be achieved by using different lighting levels together.

To make a room look more attractive, you must use different lighting fixtures with varying levels. Using only one type of lighting source can make the room look boring and unimpressive. So you must have contrasts of various lighting fixtures to make your room look different.

Creating contrast is the main goal of lighting design and is achieved by introducing varying degrees (also known as layers) of light into each room: ambient, task and accent. For example, in a dining room a chandelier could provide the ambient light, while a recessed halogen could serve as a task light that highlights a centerpiece, and wall sconces could provide accent lighting for a buffet.

Keep certain things in mind before selecting the lighting fixtures for your home, such as room size, ceiling height, architectural features, decor, bulb strength, the amount of natural light available and space utilization. Your lighting scheme should be well suited to your entire room decor.

One thing that must be kept in mind while planning your lighting design is never use decorative fixtures as the main light source… It will be too bright for a room and will also be uncomfortable for the eyes. These items will look good only if used in an efficient manner.
